Panniqtuuq (Nov 08/04) - RCMP have arrested two men trying to bring alcohol and marijuana into the community.

On Oct. 27, a 33-year-old male was caught with $2,800 worth of liquor upon his arrival at the Panniqtuuq airport. Although alcohol is prohibited in the community, RCMP Corp. Anna Marie Mallard said "we continuously have liquor-related problems."

Police are working with community groups to determine how to best deal with the problem.

The man is scheduled to appear in Panniqtuuq Justice of the Peace court on Dec. 13.

Six days later, on Nov. 2, marijuana with a street value of $21,000 was seized from a 26-year-old man making his way back to the community.

Charges against the man are pending the results of a police investigation.

Anyone caught bringing contraband substances into the community will appear in court, but it is up to a judge as to what penalty is laid, Mallard said.

Anyone aware of people bringing drugs or alcohol into the community is asked to contact the RCMP. Anonymous calls are accepted.
