No place like Nunavut's Hawaii

Sanikiluaq (Nov 29/04) - Sarah Kudluarok is a whiz at her business entrepreneurial class.

She's travelled south before because of her academic achievements, meeting famous people like Susan Aglukark in the process.

But don't expect her to be the super outgoing type who will talk your ear off. When it comes to being interviewed for the newspaper, Kudluarok is shy and doesn't know what to say.

She does, however, become much more animated when it comes to talking about her best friend and the beauty of Sanikiluaq, her home.

"If you come here, the thing to do is go seal hunting on the ice, looking for the breathing holes," said Kudluarok, 16. "And the school, visit the school."

Nuiyak school is an amazing place.

It was recently featured on the CBC show On the Road Again with Wayne Rostad. Kudluarok watched the show, but thought the segment when it finally aired was too short.

Kudluarok was born in Winnipeg and grew up with a huge family in Sanikiluaq that now numbers about 13 kids, she said.

With so many kids, games were a huge fixture of life. Her favourite game is Skiboo, which has 160 cards.

Kudluarok is fluent in Inuktitut and English, but said she wishes she was a little better with her English.

Right now, her favourite school subjects are English and physics.

"I like physics -- when it is easy," she said.

Nuiyak school is famous for promoting traditional activities like polar bear rug making.

Last year, Kudluarok made a frame for a polar bear wall hanging/rug at school. But when asked what she thinks she is best at making she replied: "Making people happy."

Caroline Meeko is Kudluarok's best friend in Sanikiluaq. She's also her cousin. They hang out a lot together and like watching TV. Kudluarok hasn't travelled much in Nunavut, but has been south a few times.

She said she would like to go to college in Ontario to become a nurse. She likes the quietness of Sanikiluaq. And while she praised the fun winter months of seal hunting and other outdoor activities, she said her favourite time of year is the summer.

"It's not too hot not too cold," she said.
