Woodshed wonders

Hay River (Sep 06/04) - As siblings grow up they usually move away from each other -- such are the realities of modern-day life.

In the case of the partners of The Woodshed -- Gift and Garden Centre, three siblings moved back to be with one another in Hay River to operate a business.

Deborah Stark and Mike and Terry Wood have moved in and out of Hay River and back again.

Stark says the trio has always been close, so working together as adult partners is not a stretch.

Terry is the newest partner to The Woodshed, having moved on May 18. However, there has been a family presence since the trio's mother, Wanda Wood, moved up to Hay River in October 1997.

Now into its third year of business, the store won its third booth competition at the annual Hay River Trade Show, held Aug. 28 and 29.

"We carry things that stores like Urban Barn would carry, at as good of a price or better," says Stark. "We try to keep the majority of our stuff between $5 and $50 and we do have a lower end and a higher end. Our front showroom is all tropical plants, it's like an oasis."

Stark says the business is highly regarded in the community.

"When people come in and buy something, they hand you money and say thank you for being here, when we feel its us that should be thanking them," she says.

The Woodshed has become so popular with Hay River shoppers that the store has been forced to expand.

The expansion will add another 1,200 sq. ft. to the store.

"The building itself is 3,000 sq. ft. Right now we are only using two thirds and a backroom, being used for storage, is being renovated for retail," Stark says.

Sales at The Woodshed tripled between 2002-2003.

"We have so many people that say they spent all their Christmas money here and the men feel comfortable, it's not too fancy. But it may be the complimentary tea and coffee," she says.
