Iqaluit (Sep 06/04) - The City of Iqaluit is taking steps to make the downtown core a lot safer for pedestrians.

On Aug. 24, council approved concept drawings to create a walking trail.

The path starts at the Four Corners, moves east down Queen Elizabeth Road and stops at the Northmart by the proposed Iqaluit Square.

Anne Crawford, member of the Iqaluit Walking Group, said the designs are a good step to making the city a better place for pedestrians.

"We are endorsing the plan, but we also recognize that there still needs to be some details worked out," she said.

It's hoped the proposed path will also help to beautify the downtown as the design also incorporates statues and carved flagstones.

Michele Bertol, city planner, said the path will help to outline some of the city's features like the arts and crafts centre, sculpture garden and other areas.

"The four corners are the heart of the community. We want to use the path to showcase who the people of Nunavut are," she said.

Deputy mayor Chris Wilson, said there is good reason to start making the city a safer place.

"We really have to start separating the pedestrians and the traffic," he said.

The city is still determining cost estimates for the proposed walkway.
