'My mom is a hero'

Norman Wells (Sep 20/04) - Laura Knox knows what heroism is. She sees it every day.

"My mom is a hero," she said. "She has raised a family, taken care of a household and worked full time, all while struggling with the nearly constant pain of arthritis."

That's why she recently nominated her mother as a 2004 Arthritis Hero.

Mary Knox, a Norman Wells resident, has had rheumatoid arthritis since 1986, when it started in her feet and began working its way up her legs.

It finally settled in her knees, forcing her to have total knee replacement on both legs.

Every September the Arthritis Society celebrates Arthritis month, with special attention to increasing awareness of the impact of arthritis in Canada.

"Being nominated is sort of humbling and at the same time makes you feel proud," said Mary.

"I don't feel like I should be honoured as a hero, because there are others who are far worse off than I am, but I am proud that my daughter nominated me. It is also great that the Society is getting more publicity and awareness in the North."

According to Laura, Mary has dealt quietly with her pain so her family and children wouldn't miss out on vacations, shopping or any other normal activities.

"I have always thought of her as a strong, courageous woman, so she fits perfectly as my Arthritis Hero!"
