This event is a clear indication of the enthusiastic support that exists for the development plans with regard to Nunavut's first diamond mine, said Tahera president Peter Gillan in a press release issued after the signing.
The agreement will ensure the Kitikmeot will have access to employment, training, and business opportunities arising from construction and operation of the project, said Gillan.
Special considerations and compensation which Tahera will provide for Inuit regarding traditional, social, and cultural matters, and effects on Inuit water rights are also outlined, said Gillan.
Representatives of the territorial and federal governments, as well as elders and residents of the community, took part in the ceremony and celebrations.
A feast was held, followed by traditional entertainment and athletic demonstrations.
