Inuvik (Sep 13/04) - Former councillor Johnny Kay is the newly-elected chief of the Tetlit Gwich'in Council in Fort McPherson.

He replaces former Chief Abe Wilson, who decided not to run this year for personal reasons. He served as chief for five years.

Kay, well-known in the hamlet for his previous four years spent on council and his work in the alcohol and drug field, said being a man of few words, he prefers to let his actions do the talking.

"I hope I can do everyone justice," Kay said of his new role as chief.

Kay received a total of 127 votes, while his closest contender, Hazel Nerysoo, received 73 votes in the Sept. 7 election.

Current hamlet Mayor Philip Blake received 47 votes.

Other candidates for mayor included James Andre, who had 45 votes; Wilbert Firth, who netted 22 votes; and James Robert, who received 19 votes.

A record number of candidates sought a seat on the Tetlit Gwich'in Council during this election.

Six Fort McPherson residents ran for the position of chief and 24 ran for council.

Kay said a mixture from various segments of the population were selected by voters.

"A lot of good people didn't make it in, but we have a good council. I'm looking forward to working with them," Kay said.

The six councillors elected include Eileen M. Koe with 158 votes; Charlie Snowshoe with 132 votes; Johnnie Charlie with 115 votes; Leslie P. Blake with 114 votes; Brian Martin with 105 votes; and Richard James Blake with 104 votes.

Kay said the diverse group includes youth, elders and workers in education and the construction industry.

Kay said he has numerous priorities for his term as chief.

"I want us to build a partnership with the community."
