Butt grabber gropes again

Yellowknife (July 07/04) - After a pair of incidents in early June, the Yellowknife butt grabber struck again on June 29.

A third Yellowknife woman had her buttocks groped from behind by a man on a bicycle while she was walking in front of the Lahm Ridge building near the Chateau Nova Hotel. This third incident occurred on Franklin Avenue at about 4 p.m.

The man then made a comment to the woman, went into the Lahm Ridge building and left a short time after.

The suspect is described as an aboriginal male in his early 20s. He has a thin build and spiked hair. At the time of the incident, he was wearing sunglasses and black clothing.

Earlier media reports on the groper prompted at least one person to call the RCMP with the name of a potential suspect.

"We're following up on that information," said RCMP Staff-Sgt. Steve McVarnock.

The June 4 and 6 butt-grabbing incidents also involved an aboriginal male in his early 20s. Police believe all three incidents are connected.

"Given the manner in which it happened, we're treating it as one and the same," McVarnock said.

Police are working through photos of possible suspects with the third victim as she had "the best look at the man," McVarnock said.

RCMP are urging female residents to exercise caution, especially when walking alone.

Anyone with information regarding these incidents is asked to call the RCMP at 669-5200, or Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
