Energy alliance proposed

Iqaluit (July 26/04) - A Western Energy Alliance could soon be reality, with the North playing a big role.

The idea, which originated at the Premiers Conference in Inuvik recently, was further discussed at the 2004 Energy and Mines Ministers Conference, held in Iqaluit last Monday and Tuesday.

"This needed to take a higher profile from Manitoba west, including the three territories," said NWT Resources, Wildlife and Economic Development minister Brendan Bell.

"Northern gas development is important for both B.C. and Alberta. We have common interests and this could be a solution."

Bell spoke about the possibility of having offices in Ottawa and Washington.

The model for the Western Energy Alliance is being based on the Western Governors' Association and how they drive the energy agenda south of the border, said Bell.

The provinces in the past have worked in isolation. Alberta has been effective in dealing with Washington in the past, but they can use the assistance of other provinces with like-minded interests, he said.

"I think it will be received well by (Prime Minister Paul) Martin as an aspect of addressing Western alienation," said Bell.
