Iqaluit (May 03/04) - Residents and elders will have a new gathering place in Nunavut's capital city once a proposed community square is complete.

City council met April 27 with John Laird, owner of Laird and Associates. He presented four preliminary designs, created after consultations with elders and the public.

"Elders wanted something that represents their traditions and what's important in their lives," he said. "There are animal themes in all the designs because animals are an important part of the culture."

Coun. Simanuk Kilabuk said he is excited to see this project moving forward.

"We need to be able to express the natural beauty around us," he said. "I think this will show the uniqueness of our community."

Mayor Elisapee Sheutiapik said there is a need in the community to have a gathering place like the proposed square.

She added the city needs more places like the square to make it more attractive for residents and visitors. The square will also represent the community's culture and heritage.

"We want to be able to show off our community to everyone," she said.

Laird will be taking the comments and suggestions by council and will provide a completed design by May.

Sheutiapik said she hopes to see some construction start this summer.
