Sick Pope sings on

Fort McMurray, Alta (Mar 08/04) - When Mackenzie Pope learned he was part of the NWT's cultural contingent for the 2004 Arctic Winter Games, he did everything he could think of to build up his immune system.

"I stayed up late and went out in the cold," he said.

Then a week before leaving for Fort McMurray he decided to play it safe. He began taking vitamins and getting lots of sleep.

The tactic proved ineffective.

"I've been battling a cold ever since I left town. Isn't that cute," said Pope.

The Hay River singer/songwriter hasn't let his illness stop his daily shows, however.

"I'll butcher my voice as long as there is a turnout," he said.

On Wednesday, Pope sang before a small crowd of 10 people as others milled about a tradeshow in the C.A. Knight Recreational centre.

"The crowds have been pretty good. This one hasn't been top notch, but that's because the trade show is going on," he said.

But, Pope said, no matter how many people are at the show he puts the same effort into each performance.

On Wednesday he did a short set, belting out cover tunes of some top 40 hits.

His voice may have been a little raspy, but it didn't seem to take away from the quality of the sound, just gave it a Marlon Brando like quality.

"The voice is going," he said. "It doesn't matter. It's a good gig. If I can put a smile on a person's face, I'm happy."

At least one person was smiling.

Three-year-old Cameron Skinner from Fort McMurray seemed to love Pope's show and his cowboy hat.

The youngster presented Pope with a page from his colouring book and then later came forward with another page looking for an autograph.

Pope happily accommodated his adoring toddler.

"He's a fan. Doesn't matter how old he is," said Pope.

Friday was Pope's last day in Fort McMurray as the Games wrap up.

It's been a blast, and really interesting, he said on Wednesday.
