Bible back on the big screen

Yellowknife (Mar 05/04) - The Bible's latest trip to the big screen has been given high ratings by several Yellowknife church officials.

The Mel Gibson film, The Passion of the Christ, has been described as a "cinematic masterpiece" by Pastor Steve McLellan of the Church of Christ.

Another pastor -- Connie Landstrom of the Holy Family Lutheran Church -- said the film was a real portrayal of the events leading up to the crucifixion of Christ.

"That was the real message. It was a superb job," Landstrom said.

One of the more controversial films of our time, its release coincides with the approaching Christian season of Lent and Easter.

"It was an emotional experience. Easter won't be the same," McLellan said.

"For anyone Christian, the film will make you look at faith differently," he said.

Jay Pickering, manager of the Capitol Theatre, said sales have been brisk since the film opened on the weekend.

"It will be a long-running film," he said. With an over-18 rating due to the violence in the film, he said viewers should "be prepared" for what they will see.

For retired Anglican Bishop John Sperry, the film was a very graphic presentation.

"I felt there was emphasis on the incessant whipping, abuse and torture which was so very powerful and long," Sperry said adding it took away from the central story. "And it is difficult to portray meanings, although the action was vivid."
