Cambridge Bay (Mar 22/04) - Cambridge Bay was rocked this week when a 49-year-old woman was found dead in her home.

A friend discovered the body when she called on the woman at about noon on Friday, March 12.

RCMP in Cambridge Bay have launched a homicide investigation following the autopsy.

"It's devastating," said Debbie Weeder, manager of the Enokhok Inn. "It's not the kind of thing that happens in your back yard."

But in this case, it did.

Weeder lives in a trailer next to the Enokhok Inn, which is located right next to the four-plex the woman lived and died in -- about 30 feet away.

Weeder is surprised no one, including herself, heard anything that Friday morning.

Weeder is also surprised no police officers have yet questioned her about the incident, considering she lives and works so close to the crime scene.

Weeder said the community wants answers.

"The fact is, the community would like to know if they caught the guy," Weeder said. "My guests were concerned. It happened right behind us." she said, adding "My heart goes out to the family."

There have been no arrests in the case, said Sgt. Gary Peck of the Cambridge Bay RCMP detachment.

"It's an ongoing investigation. We're awaiting some forensic evidence," said Peck.

Six members of the RCMP crime units from Yellowknife and Iqaluit were flown in to assist in the investigation last week.

"We meet with the family to keep them advised. They understand this investigation is a process and we will do our best to determine what happened," said Peck. "And they have been very understanding from the onset. It's a tremendous loss to them and the community."

The woman's name has not been released at this time due to the family's wishes.
