Clyde River (Oct 13/03) - Eli Qillaq has some big plans for more recreation programs he would like to see in his hometown of Clyde River.

Although Sept. 30 was his first day as the new recreation director for the hamlet, Qillaq jumped in with both feet.

"I have so many things on my mind," he said.

"They are almost too many to name."

He didn't even let an interview with News/North stop him from working on recreation programs

"Right now I'm reading a brochure on aerobics," he explained at the start of the interview. "Someone approached me about it, so I'm looking into it."

Qillaq is working on developing more recreational programs for the residents.

He explained some ideas he would like to work on include building up the hockey program, starting a broomball league and starting up a cricket program.

"I'm very hopeful I can start up these programs, with the community's support," he said.

Qillaq has been involved in recreation for many years. He explained the best part about the job is working with others.

"I love working with the people," he said. "Clyde River is great. Everybody knows everybody, which makes it a lot of fun."

He first started working in recreation a few years ago when he fell into it by chance.

"A friend needed some people with some programs so I helped him. I really liked it, so I've stuck with it," he said.

Some programs the recreation department is currently running at the community hall are board game tournaments, badminton and table tennis.

"There's always something that's going on," he said.

Qillaq is one of two new employees in the hamlet office.

Sept. 30 was also the first day for Billy Palluq, the new community economic development officer.
