Three others in the car were killed when the speeding car smashed into a telephone pole on 125A Avenue.
The teenager was in Edmonton visiting his cousin, 22-year-old Leah Tsetta, who was driving the car. He is in serious condition in an Edmonton hospital. Marty Desjarlais, 23, and Jeffrey Jackson, 25, also died in the collision.
Karen Ketza, 23, left Tsetta's house in a cab minutes before the crash. She said Tsetta was far too drunk to drive.
Earlier in the evening, Ketza was partying with Tsetta and Desjarlais at a reggae party on Edmonton's north side. Tsetta argued with Jackson at the party.
The three women left the party at 5:30 a.m. Tsetta drove. "She drove drunk. We were all in the car. We didn't even think twice. We didn't even ask if she was okay to drive."
Ketza was sick of the fighting. She borrowed $10 from Tsetta and left in a cab. She was home by 6:50. The accident happened 25 minutes later.
According to an Edmonton Journal report, a neighbours saw Jackson bleeding. One neighbour reported seeing the man stumble and fall face first into the pavement.
Ketza figures Tsetta loaded everyone into the car and sped off towards the hospital.
"This wasn't supposed to happen. People don't listen because they figure it's never going to happen to them. I thought the same thing."
Jackson was in another car crash on New Year's Eve. He was driving drunk and sped into another light pole, killing a woman in the car. He was facing a charge of criminal negligence causing death.
