Kivalliq News won seven Manitoba Community Newspaper Association honours, with editor Darrell Greer topping two photography competitions.
His photo of two firefighters battling a house fire in Rankin Inlet became MCNA's photo of the year. Another fire picture was named best spot news photo.
In addition to being named second in its circulation class for general excellence Kivalliq News finished third in best editorial page and in-house ad competitions, and second for best front page and best classified section.
In the OCNA Better Newspapers Competition, former News/North editor Merle Robillard won first for best technically enhanced photo. His picture of a person shackled to a wine bottle was featured on the cover of the November 2001's National Addiction Awareness Week supplement.
Opportunities North finished third in the competition for best special section.
NNSL's advertising department finished third in two contests: best use of art service for a "Wrap up your Halloween" promotion and in-house promotion.
