To mark the end of construction, the builder, Jack op der Heijde, president of Ninety North Construction and Development Ltd., handed over the keys to Nellie Cournoyea, chair of the Inuvik Regional Health Authority.
Cournoyea thanked the Gwich'in and Inuvialuit partners and congratulated the team in bringing in the $37 million project on time and on budget.
"I especially want to thank Ninety North for hanging in there through all these negotiations," Cournoyea said.
The $37-million contract was awarded in May 2001 to 4801 NWT Ltd., a company that brought together the Inuvialuit-owned Uummarmiut Corporation and the Nihtat Gwich'in Development Corporation.
Ninety North Partners is 51 per cent owned by Ninety North Construction and 49 per cent by Stuart Olson construction.
The new hospital will replace the one that's serviced the Delta since Inuvik was known as East 3, 40 years ago.
