"I find in high school what goes around comes around," Harvey told a group of Grade 8 Weledeh Catholic school students earlier this month.
Spring is when Grade 8 students all over Yellowknife prepare for high school in September. Both Sir John Franklin and St. Patrick high schools have been prepping the students and their parents through information sessions, meetings and promotions.
St. Patrick high school should have about 240 new Grade 9s in September while Sir John Franklin has at least 190 confirmed.
Earlier this month Weledeh students participated in an orientation session with two Grade 9 St. Patrick students -- Harvey and Vicki Marquez.
"It's not all bad. I wouldn't worry about it," said Marquez.
"High schoolers don't bite. Talk to them. They've gone through exactly what you've gone through. When you come to high school don't be scared. Go there, be yourself, be nice to people and get involved with the school."
A life journey
The adjustment into high school is all part of the life journey, St. Patrick assistant principal Colleen McDonald told the Weledeh students.
"You're going to be dealing with a lot of different personalities in high school," said McDonald of having multiple teachers. But at the same time students shouldn't be getting too worked up, said Sir John Franklin principal Mieke Cameron.
"They're not landing on a different planet. It's an extension of what they've been doing. It's just an extended family," said Cameron.
McDonald said although high school allows for more freedoms and choices, students also have more responsibilities.
"Our business is teaching you," she said. "And for that reason it's not all fun and games at St. Pat's."
While Sir John Franklin finished the orientation sessions in March, St. Patrick has a shadow morning on April 23, a Grade 7, 8 and 9 dance on April 25 and a teacher advisory finale at Niven Beach in June.
