Yellowknife (Feb 07/03) - Fourteen Northern students will have their artwork judged at the Royal Canadian Legion command level.

Each of the students placed first, second or third at the district level for the Remembrance Day poetry, poster and essay contest.

A majority of the winners, nine of the 13, this year attend Weledeh Catholic school.

The award winners from Weledeh are Megan Advaluk (first, essay), Justin Miller (first, essay), Arissa Komi (first, poster), Natalia Sewi (second, poster), Nora Russell (second, poster), Patrick Miller (third, poster), Abigail Smith (first, poster), Michael Michetti (second, poster), Nancy Nerysoo (third, poster).

Of the remaining five winners, four are from Yellowknife.

Kathleen Sullivan from Ecole St. Joseph school counts as two winners because she placed first and second in the poetry category.

Alyissa Pickering from William McDonald school placed first in the poetry contest.

Kristin Richardson of Yellowknife placed first in the poster contest.

Finally, Christalyn Bernice Oligona Kayogana from Jimmy Hikok school in Kugluktuk placed second in the essay contest.

Each entry will now be judged in Calgary and if they place first, second or third they will be forwarded to the Dominion Command level competition in Ottawa.

Last year an entry from Yellowknife won at the national level.

Lloyd Lush, president of the Yellowknife Legion, said all the entries were very good.

Lush said it is possible another Northern entry will gain national recognition this year.

"They've got potential, they've definitely got potential," said Lush.

The contest is generally well participated in and Lush said he was pleased to see all the entries.

"We send packages to all the schools and the kids and the teachers are always really interested," he said.
