Keely Hart, director of leisure services for Mack Travel, says currency conversion is one reason going south can be cost-effective.
"In general, Mexico is a good value," she says. "It's reasonably priced and (travelers) can convert their money from Canadian dollars without having to convert to U.S. dollars first."
Mexico is a popular destination for honeymooners looking to save a few bucks, and all-inclusive vacations are gaining in popularity.
"They're very popular," says Hart. "Everything is prepaid in Canadian funds. It's a nice way to do it."
All-inclusive vacation packages are available in a variety of Southern hot spots such as the Caribbean, Bahamas, Florida, Hawaii and Mexico as destinations and include costs such as airfare (usually from a major Canadian airport), accommodation, meals and some activities.
Every vacation is different, says Hart, and couples should sit down and discuss what they want out of a vacation before booking.
"(Couples) should keep in mind what they like to do and gear their holiday towards that," says Hart. "If they're looking for something a little different, there's always Contiki (European tours for those ages 18 to 35), cruises, eco-tourism, small group adventure travel and exclusive resorts."
Cruising offers honeymooners a chance to do as much, or as little, as they want.
"I think a lot of people are afraid to cruise," she says. "They're afraid of boredom and of being herded around. On a cruise, you have a choice: you can be as busy as you want to be, or just spend your time relaxing."
Before heading to that exotic destination, travelers may want to check with the Yellowknife Public Health Centre to find out whether or not they may need to be immunized prior to travel.
"It all depends on where you're going," says Hart. "For most destinations, you don't have to worry, but if you're planning a trip to Central or South America, you may need to get immunizations."
