Inuvik (Jan 31/03) - Council is planning to ban smoking in all facilities owned and operated by the Town of Inuvik.

Town councillor Arlene Hansen introduced a motion in favour of the ban on Weedless Wednesday Jan. 22, during National Non-smoking Week.

Cheryl Sharpe, a smoker, was the only councillor in attendance at the meeting who voted against the motion.

Currently smoking is permitted in a section of the Inuvik Fire Hall and inside the Community Hall at the Midnight Sun Recreation Centre during licensed events.

"So Christmas parties, wedding dances, Ducks Unlimited, any of those events in the Community Hall where they are selling alcohol would now be non-smoking," said Mayor Peter Clarkson.

Town administrators have been directed to draft a bylaw, which must go before council for three readings and a debate before its passed.

Smoking will still be permitted at the Inuvik Curling Club, which is a leased facility. Council has no intention of making the Turning Point facility non-smoking either, since that is leased out as well.

Coun. Alfred Moses is also circulating a petition around town in support of a smoking ban in all restaurants and public facilities open to children under the age of 18.
