Murph ice plant not in Rae

Yellowknife (Jan 17/03) - The ice plant from the old Gerry Murphy arena the city of Yellowknife donated to Rae hasn't arrived in Rae yet.

And it may never get there. The city needs more information from the recreation director about the arena in Rae, said Grant White, director of community services for the City of Yellowknife.

"We've heard through the grapevine that it's coming," said Conan Donahue, the recreation director in Rae. "It's a matter of shipping it here."

White said the ice plant has not been shipped to Rae yet because city council isn't convinced Rae can afford to handle the new ice plant once it arrives.

"We're still waiting to hear from (Donahue) to see if they want it or not, if it's feasible for them," White said on Wednesday.

Late last year the city announced it would give Rae the old ice plant as a gift so the hamlet could enjoy ice in their arena all-year round.

"Rae is an important community to us," Coun. David McCann said. "They are our closest neighbour, and they do a lot of business with us."
