Yellowknife (Jan 10/03) - One of Sir John Franklin high school's top achievers was honoured recently.

Class of 2002 graduate Gordon Stephenson was on hand to receive the Governor General's Award.

The award is handed out to a student for high achievement.

A high achiever earning a 90s average, he was also described by principal Meike Cameron as a community-minded individual.

As well, he was involved in a vast array of school sports and took on a number of leadership roles in the school.

Stephenson is now attending the University of Calgary where is working towards a degree in engineering.

That latest pursuit earned him the next presentation given out during the assembly.

Stephenson, along with John Zaozirney (who was not in attendance), received the Mel Brown scholarship worth $1,000.

The scholarship is awarded to students from the NWT or Nunavut pursuing engineering degrees.

It was named for late NAPEGG director Mel Brown.

Finally, the school council presented a cheque for $1,000 to the Alison McAteer House.

The $1,000 was in conjunction with a food drive the school organized where proceeds went to the women's centre and families in Africa.

Carolyn Johnson accepted the cheque on behalf of the women's centre and explained the work the centre does advocating for women and children's rights.
