Coppermine (Dec 02/02) - Nine young Kugluktuk residents went on a property crime spree Nov. 16.

During the first incident, four youths broke into the Kugluktuk high school and the Aboriginal Head Start school and stole a small number of items.

After an investigation, police identified four suspects, one of whom was charged with break and enter. The three remaining perpetrators were under the age of 12 and could not be charged.

Windows were also broken at Jimmy Hikok elementary school that night. Two youths were charged with vandalism and released with conditions.

Three youths also attempted to break into the First Air building that night. All three were charged with break and enter with intent. Two of the three youths also face breach of undertaking charges and one faces a charge for possessing break-in tools.

RCMP Const. Mike Lokken said most of the children involved were known to police.

"The majority of these kids are known to us and have been before the courts on break and enters and property crimes," said Lokken.
