Iqaluit (Dec 23/02) - Iqaluit has a new deputy fire chief with over 20 years experience.

He's dedicated to his job, to the point of offering to go to people's homes to teach them about fire safety or to go over a home evacuation plan.

"The biggest challenge of my job is to educate people about fire safety.

"We have to start with the little tots because they're so eager to learn. Nine out of 10 kids either want to be a police officer or a firefighter," said Tobin.

He's been all over the place with his job, his first as a civilian after 23 years in the military.

The only place he hasn't been in Canada is the Yukon.

Through all of his travels, Tobin's wife, Debra, has followed.

They've been together for 22 years and have been married for 16.

Tobin said he met Debra at a restaurant in Moose Jaw, Sask. She was a waitress, he was a young military man.

"I used to go to the restaurant all the time and I never saw her.

"One day, there was a guy bothering her and I calmed the situation down. I took a look at her and it was love at first sight," explained Tobin.

He said they have settled in nicely. Debra recently accepted a job working for Nunavut's finance department.

Tobin said the people he works with at the station have made the move easier, as the firefighters are a tight group and know their stuff.

"Morale here is high. It's almost through the ceiling. Everyone gets along fantastic. There's no question they can't answer," explained Tobin.

Since the crew knows so much, Tobin will focus on getting them to educate the public.

For now, he offers these safety tips:

- Check your smoke alarms. If they're hard-wired, do a monthly test. If they're battery operated, change the batteries every six months.

- Have an escape plan.

- Make sure all the doors in your house function properly.

- Use power bars.

- Make sure real Christmas trees are watered.

Tobin said he has no plans on leaving Iqaluit anytime soon.

He's got a six-month probation period to go through before being made a permanent member of the department.
