Yellowknife (Dec 20/02) - RCMP were busy combing the city streets Tuesday after a break and enter occurred at a downtown residence.

The owner of the residence returned home Tuesday morning and discovered an unknown individual inside.

The owner chased the suspect out of the home and immediately alerted police.

After obtaining a description of the suspect, officers began patrolling the downtown area in search of the culprit.

One male individual who matched the description was detained by Sgt. Al McCambridge, but released when it was determined he was not their man.

After being provided with a second "more clear description" Const. James Lang said a second suspect was taken into custody.

"Then we determined that wasn't him either, so we have not made an arrest on that break and enter," said Lang.

Police would not disclose any circumstances about the break-in or if anything was taken from the home because of the ongoing investigation.

Police issue warning

Yellowknife has been plagued by both residential and commercial break and enters over the past few months.

Several individuals are now before the courts, but the RCMP has urged Yellowknifers to take extra precaution in protecting their homes from intruders.

Suspicious behaviour of any kind should be reported to police immediately.

To discourage thieves from targeting your home, leave some lights on when you are out, install a high-quality deadbolt lock, and even consider leaving the radio or television on so your home appears occupied.

If you are going to be away for a few days ensure your driveway is shovelled regularly and your mail is collected by a trusty neighbor or friend.
