The dog originally hails from Tuktoyaktuk, but after being run over by a snowmobile three weeks ago he was to flown to Yellowknife, where he is currently recovering at Great Slave Animal Hospital from a broken leg.
The puppy's original owner wanted him put down because he couldn't afford the medical bill, but RCMP members in Tuktoyaktuk couldn't bear the thought. After receiving treatment at the nursing station, the dog was sent by police plane to Yellowknife for surgery.
The only problem was that cost of the surgery is expensive, over $1,000. Fortunately, the RCMP saw a way they could help out.
`"We have a fund -- we sell T-shirts, vests, and hoodies," said Lorrie Meissner, an RCMP employee in Tuktoyaktuk. "We use the money for various things in the community, so we sent off a check because they fixed his leg and didn't put him down."
The hospital and NWT SPCA matched the RCMP's $500 contribution, and Tuk received surgery Nov. 23.
Because Tuk's leg required a metal plate inserted into it, he need a fairer climate to be comfortable so going back to Tuktoyatuk is not an option.
Regardless, veterinarian Dr. Tom Pisz said Tuk is good with children and would make a great family pet.
"The surgery's paid but we don't have any home for him," said Pisz. "Maybe before Christmas someone will come and get him."
