Wayne Matthew Kakfwi is on trial in NWT Supreme Court this week on charges that date back to Feb. 14, 2001.
He's accused of forcing a 40-year-old woman to have sexual intercourse and oral sex, hitting her and threatening to kill her if she called police.
The trial began Monday afternoon as a jury of 12 heard testimony from the woman and a neighbour who lives in an apartment next door.
The woman testified that Kakfwi became aggressive at her apartment after a night of drinking at the Gold Range and later at her residence.
She said that after several acquaintances left, he grabbed her and forced her into the bedroom.
"I was telling him I didn't want to have sex with him," said the victim in her testimony.
She said that when she finally escaped into the living room and attempted to phone police he punched her in the jaw, ripped the phone out of the wall and said he was going to kill her if she called the police.
She said she was able to push him out of her apartment then go to her next door neighbour at approximately 3 a.m. for help. The neighbour then called police.
The Crown is expected to call three police officers and a medical examiner who examined the woman hours after the attack. The trial is expected to wrap up on Thursday.
