Rankin Inlet (Nov 06/02) - Bargain hunters will be out in full force this coming weekend for the Kataujaq Society's annual charity auction at the Leo Ussak elementary school gym.

The event will be held Saturday, Nov. 9.

The society's executive director, Evelyn Thordarson, says a 30-minute viewing session will be held from 1 p.m. until 1:30 p.m. for potential bidders to eye the items up for auction.

The bidding will begin at 1:30 p.m.

"In the past we used to have viewing for a full hour, but we found that was really too long," says Thordarson.

"People wanted to get started with the bidding and we felt 30 minutes would be ample enough time to view the assorted items up for bid."

The charity auction is the Kataujaq Society's main fundraiser of the year.

Thordarson says money raised at the auction goes toward the society's day care and safe shelter.

"The managers and staff at the day care and safe shelter submit their wish lists before the auction is held.

"Once the auction is over, the lists are taken to the society's board of directors to decide what will be purchased from the funds raised."

This year's auction will have an extra element of excitement with the presence of professional auctioneer Terry Wachniak of Winnipeg, Manitoba.

"Terry's donating his services and First Air was good enough to donate his ticket from Winnipeg and back.

"Tara's Bed and Breakfast has also donated a room for his stay and we're grateful for that support."

The annual Kataujaq Society Charity Auction always features a number of big ticket items, as well as an impressive array of practical and personal treasures.

This year promises to be no exception.

"We have a beautiful painting donated by Bill Gawor and we've had an excellent response from the people to whom we sent letters looking for support.

"There's going to be lots of great stuff up for auction this year."

Last year's auction raised close to $10,000 and the society is hoping to hit the $15,000 mark this year.

"I hope lots of people come out to enjoy the auction on Saturday.

"We're here to help people in the community with anything they may need, so we hope they come out and support us at our fundraiser."
