Yellowknife (Aug 21/02) - Rain and cold weather are interfering with road and sewer construction schedules in the city, but most should be done by Sept. 15.
"We are fighting the elements," said city public works manager Dennis Kefalis. "The contractors may be working a little later than they normally do. Usually they shut down around 7 p.m, but they might work until 10 p.m.," he said.
A brief update on construction around town:
- repaving on 51st Ave. should be done by the time you read this.
- a half-day of construction on Gitzel St. is coming up at some point in the next couple of weeks.
- repaving on Horton Ct. will start in the next few days.
- the city plans to install streetlight conduits and concrete sidewalks on 48th St. in the near future. That should take about two weeks.
- water and sewer work on Ptarmigan Rd. and Forrest Dr. should be done around Sept. 15.
- water and sewer installation in phase three of Niven Lake should finish up slightly before Sept. 15.
The city hopes to finish everything up by Sept. 15, its normal finishing date for construction.
"That's always been the date that weather stays good right up to then," said Kefalis. "But there might be some minor cleanup stuff right after that."
