Yellowknife (June 28/02) - Dorothy Anderson's recent return to Yellowknife stirs up one memory in particular.

She came to visit her brother Doug, who is ailing with cancer, and currently residing at Stanton Regional hospital.

The last time Anderson was at Stanton, she was also one of the first.

The former long-time resident -- she had moved North with her sister Norma in 1948 -- was also on a visit at the time, helping her siblings take care of their mother's estate in 1989.

Anderson was only here a day or two when she came down with a violent asthma attack and needed to be hospitalized.

As it happened, the old Stanton Hospital, where Aven Manor stands today, was due to close and its remaining patients transferred to the new hospital on Old Airport Road.

"The night before we all moved the nurse came over and asked if we wanted to order some Chinese food from the Gold Range (Cafe)," Anderson recalls.

The hospital was in full party mood.

"They have these big egg rolls that they're famous for," adds Anderson. "I don't think I ordered any, but I sure wish I did now."

The next day all the patients were moved into the newly minted hospital. Anderson says she was considerably impressed.

"It was lovely, really luxurious," says Anderson, noting that it was Dr. (Oliver) Stanton himself who delivered her four children. "I was used to the old hospital because that's where I had my kids.

"The only thing I remember was that I was desperate for a shower, but I was hooked up to the IV. So I went to the shower with my arm out, and I got water all over the floor. I felt bad because I thought I was wrecking their brand new hospital."

Anderson said she still thinks it is a nice hospital, and a perfect tribute to the man for whom the facility was named.

"Dr. Stanton was my doctor, "says Anderson. "He brought all four of my kids in. I do think the care they (Stanton Hospital) give (patients) is excellent."
