Iqaluit (Mar 04/02) - Jeannie Manning will stand trial for second-degree murder of David Adla.

Justice Rene Foisy announced the verdict after considering evidence at her one-and-a-half day preliminary hearing in Iqaluit last week.

Crown lawyer Steve White called 10 witnesses to the stand.

Defence lawyer Susan Cooper did not call any witnesses.

Police arrested and charged Manning on Sept. 1. She was often emotional throughout the hearing, covering her eyes and crying.

During a break, her sobs were audible throughout the courthouse.

Several supporters sat close behind her, comforting her and talking to her during breaks.

Foisy called the stabbing "a very unfortunate occurrence" but concluded "that there is enough evidence to put the accused on trial."

For a second-degree murder conviction, the Crown must prove Manning intended to kill or intended to cause bodily harm likely to result in death and continued with those actions.

Her trial date will be set on Thursday, March 7. She will remain in custody in Iqaluit until that date.
