Yellowknife (Oct 05/01) - Samuel Hearne students witnessed democracy in action during the past week.
Last Friday an assembly was held in the gym, during which the two candidates for the student position on the Inuvik District Education Authority gave speeches.

Grade 11 student Amanda Johns promised to listen if elected.
"If you want somebody who's really willing to give it her all, then I'm the one to vote for," said Johns, who is treasurer for the student council.
Candace Ciboci took the podium next.
"I'm very resourceful," said Ciboci, president of the grad committee.
"People come to me when they want something done right. What you want is what I will try to give you" said Ciboci.
An election was held Monday morning, and Ciboci happily emerged victorious.
Students were also to vote in a youth representative for Inuvik town council, but Dez Loreen won by acclamation.
Loreen said he wants to establish a strong youth voice on council.
"I'm looking forward to it. It's going to be a fun ride."
Loreen is finishing high school this year and is also student council president.
"I'm just glad to be where I am right now."
