Iqaluit (Sep 10/01) - Eyes cast down, Jeannie Manning, 42, entered Iqaluit airport destined for Fort Smith's Women's Correctional Centre Sept. 5.

Manning is charged with first degree murder in the stabbing death of 44-year-old Davidee Adla. Manning returns to Iqaluit for her first court appearance Oct. 2.

Few people would talk about the former Cape Dorset couple on the record.

Adla played hockey and hunted.

Manning is described as coming from a good family. Legendary photographer Peter Pitseolak was her grandfather. She worked as an interpreter, most recently for the Legislative Assembly.

An acquaintance playing bingo with the accused days before her arrest said Manning seemed "fine."

"We're definitely here to support Jeannie," said Doug Donaldson, executive director of the John Howard Society. He was in court last week.

JHS is a private social service agency supporting people in crisis.

"(Jeannie) came to us recently to relocate herself and her daughter. She needed help," Donaldson said.

During court proceedings, Judge Beverly Browne issued two temporary no-contact orders. A publication ban on future proceedings was also filed.

Adla's memorial service was scheduled for the weekend.
