Aklavik (Aug 13/01) - An Aklavik man who rammed his former girlfriend's truck with his all-terrain four-wheeler was sentenced in territorial court Aug. 7 to 30 days in jail.
Donald Storr, 24, pleaded guilty to one count of dangerous driving. His jail term is to be served consecutively to a three-month term he's currently serving for assaulting the same victim.
The court heard that on June 23, at about 1:30 a.m., Storr's 15-year-old former girlfriend was driving around town in her father's truck when she came across an intoxicated Storr driving a four-wheeler.
She stopped to talk with Storr, but when she attempted to drive away, Storr threw a helmet at the truck, and attempted to block her with the four-wheeler. A chase ensued through town, during which Storr rammed the truck twice, causing $1,882 damage to the truck.
In his address to the court prior to sentencing, Storr said he had been under stress because he had just lost a close uncle to suicide, and he was having problems with his girlfriend.
He said that he was using his current jail term to reflect on his life and he has since turned to God and is attending Alcoholics Anonymous meetings.
"I want to be able to go though life with a straight way of thinking," he said. "I have two daughters I really love and I don't want them to grow up without a father."
Judge Brian Bruser also ordered a one-year probation period during which he was ordered not to communicate with his former girlfriend unless she initiates contact. He was also issued a six-month driving prohibition, except for the purposes of employment.
