Yellowknife (July 16/01) - A summer course in Rae is helping students get badly needed computer skills without leaving their community.
Ten students, who graduate this week, spent two weeks mastering basic computer skills,
Windows 98 and keyboarding at the Aurora Learning Centre. More than half the class are currently unemployed.
Since the student's skill levels vary--some are turning on a computer for the first time--they work through manuals at their own pace, while a teacher assists them.
Instructor Maurice Trottier said this is the only opportunity for students to upgrade their computer skills without leaving Rae.
"Many of my students are mothers of very young children," Trottier said. "So it's not easy for them to study in Edmonton."
Jacynthia Rabesca said the program saved her an expensive trip to Yellowknife.
"I thought I knew the basics, but there is a lot more to it," Rabesca said. "I liked it all except the typing. I need a lot more practice."
The course, which gives students the prerequisites for a business and technology diploma, was funded by NSR Employment Solutions Ltd. on behalf of the Dogrib Rae Band and Council.
A second two-week session is tentatively scheduled for August.
