Inuvik (July 13/01) - Mike Muller is this year's winner in the regional board-member category of the NWT Outstanding Volunteer Service Award.
Muller received the award, which is sponsored by the Department of Municipal and Community Affairs, during Canada Day festivities.
Muller has been involved with the town's recreation parks advisory board for five years, and currently is the chair.
He also has been on the executive for the NWT Badminton Association for four or five years, and has been involved with the Inuvik Badminton Club for at least five years.
And Muller is an organizer with Inuvik Ultimate frisbee.
Of his award, Muller insisted he's just one of many volunteers in town. "I'm just representative of a lot of people," he said.
Muller said the recreation parks advisory board has done some good work.
"In some ways we've tried to give the folks in Inuvik a chance to express some of their views to council about what they want the town to look like."
Muller said Inuvik has great recreational facilities, and that in a survey a few years ago young people said they didn't have time to take part in any more activities.
He said that shows town council, staff and volunteers are providing "positive opportunities for people of all ages."
Muller said he volunteers as much as he does to make Inuvik a better place, a place where people can spend their time in positive ways.
