Cambridge Bay (Jun 25/01) - Seven young Cambridge Bay residents are lucky to be alive after their vehicle rolled twice before landing on its side.

RCMP Sgt. Gary Peck said the group of seven, all in their late teens and early 20s, was heading into the hamlet from the airport when the driver lost control of the sport utility vehicle.

Peck said alcohol was a factor in the June 19 event.

"SUVs are one of those vehicles with a different centre of gravity. They ended up rolling at least twice," said Peck.

Two of the female passengers were medevaced out of Cambridge Bay. Two others sustained minor injuries.

Charges are pending against the driver, whose name will be released only after charged are laid. He said that could happen when the investigation wraps up sometime next week.

Peck said the driver could be charged under the Criminal Code or the Highway Traffic Act.

He added that the group of passengers and the driver were lucky to have walked away from the accident. "Drinking and driving don't mix. We're very fortunate we didn't have a fatality," said Peck.
