Well-earned awards

Fort Simpson (Jun 22/01) - Thirty-one years of working for the same employer is a long time, but Diane Edwards has done just that.

A receptionist for the Department of Health and Social Services, she said she never imagined sticking with the job this long.

"Not really...." she said, her voice trailing off.

Edwards, a modest woman of few words, began working for the Health and Social Services executive in 1970. She has produced critical information upon request on many occasions, according to chief executive officer Kathy Tsetso.

"She's a gold mine ... a world of knowledge," Tsetso said.

Edwards is the longest standing employee with DCHSS in the region, but there were plenty of others who have committed at least 10 years of service. They were honoured by the department on Saturday, each receiving a certificate and a pin.

From nurse's aides to clerical and administrative workers to cooks, each has, in some way, helped look after the elders and those who are hurting, board chair Allan Landry said. They have carried out their duties "professionally and gracefully with skills that no one else could."

Minnie Letcher, director of community programs for DCHSS, evoked laughter when she told the all-woman assemblage of award-winners, "I am woman, I am invincible, I am tired ... so give yourself a break today," she said.
