Suicide line has home, no one to answer

Kugluktuk (May 28/01) - The community's Suicide HOPE-line is a step closer to being operational.

Despite months of looking for someone to take over the service, Coun. Gordon Bolduc said the hamlet is no closer to getting it back in operation. The line was disconnected earlier this year when the people who ran the phone line from their home moved away.

"We just don't have people coming forward," said Bolduc.

The phone line has been moved to the community's Awareness Centre and steps are being taken to have the calls answered by Awareness Centre staff.

Various counselling and alcohol and drug programs are also hosted there.

"We just want to try and get it up and running and we try to keep asking the public to volunteer," he said.

As for why no one has stepped forward to answer the calling, Bolduc said he thought many of the community's trained volunteers were either involved in other issues or had moved from the Kitikmeot.
