Yellowknife (May 14/01) - A slew of Northern students and tradespeople are headed to Edmonton at the end of May, courtesy of the federal government.
Twenty-six people from the two territories made it to the national-level of combat in the Skills Canada competition.
The following NWT residents posted the best results during competition earlier in May:
Fort Smith: Eric Landry, post-secondary auto service; Clyde Takazo, secondary carpentry; Stanley Bourke, secondary culinary arts; Brett Clarke, post-secondary heavy equipment mechanic; David Monchuk, post-secondary welding.
Hay River: Tom McDonnell, post-secondary culinary arts.
Inuvik: Paul Charlie, post-secondary carpentry; and, Katie Hicks, secondary job interview.
Yellowknife: Kelda Braden, secondary auto service; Corey Ash, post-secondary cabinetmaking; Mark Campbell, post-secondary electrical wiring; Andrew Matthews, secondary graphic design; Elizabeth Turner, secondary hairstyling; Jennifer Stroeder, secondary speech; Kathryne Casement, secondary restaurant services; Kimberly Novak, post-secondary restaurant service; Ryan Byrne, secondary small engine repair; Darcy Irwin and Brie-Anne Jefferson, secondary TV & video production; Christopher Fournier, secondary Web page design; and Nathan Pike, secondary welding.
From Nunavut: Calvin Korchinos, from Cambridge Bay, in the electrical wiring category and Hellin Alariaq, of Cape Dorset, in the job interview category were also selected. Other Nunavut delegates will be Lino Aqatsiaq, Igloolik, carpentry; Andre Otokiak, Cambridge Bay, culinary arts; and Ashevak Taukie, Cape Dorset, plumbing.
