Pangnirtung (Apr 23/01) - A 21-year-old man is dead after the snowmobile he was driving crashed April 17.
Ame Angmarlik, a Precious Children's Daycare worker, died from injuries sustained when his machine flipped on a rock pile last Tuesday night, said RCMP Cpl. Ed Anderson.
According to police, the man was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.
Angmarlik was taken to the health centre with head injuries. He died the next morning, Anderson said.
RCMP and the coroner are looking into the incident.
Police suspect alcohol played a role in the crash. Alcohol is prohibited in Pangnirtung.
Friends remember Angmarlik as a well-liked, outgoing young man.
Marilyn Fradsham, Alookie school principal, did not know Angmarlik but many of her staff did.
"He was especially known for his kindness towards children," Fradsham said.
One resident, who requested anonymity, said Angmarlik's death was particularly painful for the community given the recent suicides of two Pangnirtung youths.
Angmarlik's brother, Allan, died last summer in an ultra light accident between Kimmirut and Iqaluit.
