Inuvik (Apr 13/01) - There's new bins around town but it's not just a place to toss away any old trash.
The Inuvik Recycling Society introduced its new PET bins at the Muskrat Jamboree. They are to be used for pop cans, plastic pop bottles and juice boxes.
Although one bin was on the jamboree grounds, society president Jennifer Walker-Larsen said the bins are meant for indoor use.
She said about 17 bins are to be placed at the schools and in various offices around town.
"There's definitely a lot of businesses and people in offices that are approaching me to ask about how they can get the bins," Walker-Larsen said.
"So in that way the response has been good."
She said it'll take time for people to get used to the bins, and that later on a larger, outdoor bin will be put in place.
Breakfast held
During the jamboree the society put on a pancake and sausage breakfast at Ingamo Hall. About 120 people took part in the event, held Sunday morning. About $500 was raised.
As well, Walker-Larsen said the society is planning a household hazardous waste collection in May or June, depending on weather.
Examples of this kind of waste include paints, glue products, aftershave, unused medicine, dyes, oil, gas, antifreeze, pesticides, fertilizers, household cleaning products and batteries.
Walker-Larsen said the items collected will be shipped to an approved facility down south.
