Yellowknife (Mar 07/01) - There is now more than just pizza to choose from at St. Patrick high school.

This is thanks to the Rock Cafe, located in the food studies room. The cafe replaces the Travel Club's business, which used to sell daily slices of pizza.

The student-run program is non-profit and over the last two weeks has made over $2,100. Kelly Hiltz is the founder of the program and also the founder of the earlier breakfast program.

"The purpose of the program is to provide a food service and provide an in- school work experience," said Hiltz.

The program was originally a breakfast program and has now turned into a full service program for breakfast and lunch.

"We have spent $3,500 on food and expect to make it back by the end of March," said Hiltz.

The program wants to provide healthy food for the kids and has to follow certain guidelines, such as providing some healthy food. The menu for entrees is rotated every two weeks and includes some things like lasagna and caesar salad with garlic bread, sloppy joes, tuna melts, and chicken burgers. Soups, salads, sandwiches and desserts are sold every day. They now have a breakfast card for $10 which could easily cover a week's worth of bagels, tea, coffee, etc.

"I would be surprised if it didn't keep going because it has been so successful," said Hiltz.

The cafe is applying for a health promotion fund, which would help expand the cafe to serve the needs of the youth in the school. Because they had originally planned to serve 60 people a day and there are more, they need to expand.

The duties of the youth working in the program include preparing the food, washing dishes and cleaning up the area. Approximately 100 people use the cafe every day.
