Inuvik (Mar 02/01) - Shelley Yuen is a university student who gets to apply what she learns in the classroom to real life.
The third-year physiotherapist student at the University of Alberta said her second practicum in Inuvik is challenging.
"I have my own patients and stuff," Yuen said.
"It's called a mixed rural placement. It's mostly outpatient orthopedics."
She explained that she can consult her supervisors when necessary.
Yuen started her five-week practicum in mid-February. She said she's enjoyed her first trip North so far.
"I like it. When I first got up here I was expecting complete blackness and freezing cold, and it was nice," Yuen said.
"Most of the people I meet are from the hospital, and I hang out with the people who live in the nursing residency. That's where I'm staying."
Yuen, who is from Edmonton, said she's always wanted to enter the health profession and really liked physio as soon as she was exposed to it.
"It's really good and I like helping people. I think it's a great job."
Yuen will graduate next year.
"When I first graduate actually I wouldn't mind travelling for a bit, maybe working in a different country or something. That'd be really interesting. I like travelling, so I might as well do it while I can."
