Yellowknife (Mar 14/01) - They're our future. Soon-to-be nurses, journalists, pilots and politicians learning about budgets, time management, public relations and -- the big one -- compromise.
Eight Ecole St. Joseph students are leaping towards the adult world with a student organized Family Health Fair on March 29.
The Grade 5 and 6 students are responsible for securing sponsors, booths and volunteers for the evening event.
The star attractions? Fruit smoothies served from a grass hut, indoor mini-golf, a nutrition wheel and blood pressure station.
"We're promoting healthy living and raising awareness about diabetes," said student Karly Oliver.
Oliver said a classmate left Ecole St. Joseph this school year because of diabetic complications. The departure did not motivate the fair, but students have since reflected upon the disease.
All phone calls, cooking and equipment gathering is the eight-person committee's responsibility.
"Getting people to agree on things was the hardest thing," Oliver said.
Principal Flo Campbell is keeping a supportive eye on students.
Trial and error has been a positive and reoccurring theme.
"We were thinking of doing a whole cafe but it was just too much," said Lana Campbell, the second half of a two-person public relations team.
With the event just two weeks away and spring break in full swing, students are whipping up posters and placing final confirmation calls.
"It's been fun. I like coming up with ideas and making them happen," Lana Campbell said.
