Iqaluit (Mar 12/01) - When Atchie Kotaigo went to warm up a truck at the Toonoonik Hotel he got quite a scare.
"Just as I stepped out into the entrance I saw these two guys walking in wearing ski masks," he said. "Both were carrying some kind of black object that appeared to be sticks or something."
The incident happened just before 3 a.m., Feb. 28, as the security guard was making his rounds at the hotel and keeping the vehicles warm in the cold weather.
"I had eye contact with the guy in front for a few seconds," he said.
"They both ran off then I ran back and closed my door."
Kotaigo called police who arrived at the scene quickly. They searched the premises but were unable to find anything. Even footprints had been covered up by blowing snow during the windy night.
"Basically we had nothing to go on," explained Sgt. Mike O'Malley. "It was cold out and a lot of people wear ski masks when it's cold out, but it is suspicious in nature."
Iqaluit RCMP said it is unlikely anything will come of the incident, but Kotaigo said he will never forget it.
The hotel only had a few guests, who were not disturbed .
"During the event, I wasn't that scared but a half-hour later I thought I could have got hurt and realized I was just lucky," Kotaigo said.
"Them using ski masks was pretty funny to me. The only thing that scared me was the thing in their hands."
