A contest for students

Yellowknife (Feb 21/01) - Everyone likes a challenge; it's even more fun when you can win a prize, too.
That's what will happen for school children as Yellowknife Catholics Schools and Yellowknifer offer a "Learning Challenge." It's a monthly quiz containing questions geared to three different age levels: kindergarten-Grade 3, grades 4-8 and grades 9-12.
"It's exactly what the title suggests," said Kern Von Hagen, superintendent of schools for Yellowknife Catholic Schools. "The Learning Challenge will ... try to accentuate knowledge, accentuate learning, and have some fun."
It's open to all school-aged children in Yellowknife and simple to enter.
Once a month, Yellowknifer will publish a list of questions on the Kids' Page. Simply mark the correct answer, cut out the form and mail it or drop it off at the Yellowknife Catholic School board office by the deadline. The winners will be selected from the entries with correct answers. Each winner receives a $15 gift certificate to The Book Cellar.
Winners' names will be published with the next month's questions.
Some answers will be obvious, others will take some research.
"Students are going to have to use whatever tools or means they have to come to the answers," said Von Hagen.
Part of the Challenge will include reading Yellowknifer. One question will include information that can only be found by looking through that edition of the newspaper.
Watch for posters being posted at city schools for more information.
So on March 2, get a copy of Yellowknifer and get ready to take the challenge.
