Rankin Inlet (Jan 31/01) - Family members in Rankin Inlet have the opportunity to let their creative juices flow and possibly win prizes for it.
The Rankin Inlet Community Learning Centre is staging a literacy challenge to celebrate national Family Literacy Day.
The official date for national Literacy Day was Jan. 27, but the centre's family literacy co-ordinator, Cecelia Ayaruak, hopes the contest will entice more members of the community to get involved in the spirit of the day.
"We're looking for a story to be written, one or two double-spaced pages in length, that can be in Inuktitut, English or French," says Ayaruak.
"The project must include a picture with the story and at least two people in a family must work on it.
"They can break up the work however they want to and it's open to everyone of all ages."
Submissions will be received at the Community Learning Centre up to and including Feb. 9.
The stories will be judged by a panel in Rankin, and prizes will be awarded on Feb. 14 from various community groups and agencies.
Community adult educator Bob Spensley says every participant will receive a copy of all the entries just for entering.
He says the stories should be interesting because they have to be about the community of Rankin Inlet.
"We're looking for subjects people can either comment on critically, or positively, about their community," says Spensley.
"Best of all, the winners' story, names and pictures will be published in the Kivalliq News in both Inuktitut and English for everyone to enjoy.
"The idea came from the Arviat Leaning Centre, which is doing a similar promotion, just with stories. Emil Arnalak is the adult educator there and he's already received more than 60 entries.
"I know Rankin can do at least that well."
