Library marking Family Literacy Day

Inuvik (Jan 26/01) - A Reading Party is just one of many upcoming events and programs at the Inuvik Centennial Library.
Nora Dixon, director of library services, explained staff are holding a Reading Party this Saturday to mark Family Literacy Day. The party kicks off at 3 p.m.
After reading with family or friends, participants will continue their celebrations in the community room.
Dixon explained there's plenty of other activities coming up. The first meeting of a Book Talk Club takes place Jan. 31 at 7 p.m.
"We're just hoping to get it off the ground," Dixon said.
She explained that it will differ from regular book clubs, in that members will discuss books they've read and enjoyed recently. Dixon said this will ensure a broader selection of books will be discussed.
Due to heavy demand, the babysitting course will not start up this week as planned. Dixon said about 30 people registered, so half of them will start their course Jan. 31, with the other half starting early in March.
Notices will be posted at Sir Alexander Mackenzie school to tell participants which group they are in.
A Family Story Time program involving three and four year olds and their families starts next week.
The program will involve adults reading a story to the children, and having them do a related activity, plus helping them find library materials of interest to sign out. Family Story Time will be held Tuesdays from 6:30-7:15 p.m.
Dixon said staff are planning presentations on a wide range of topics for adults, including stamp collecting, art in the western arctic, and a Moroccan travelogue.
Community volunteers will conduct these sessions, and staff are looking for someone to do an evening or weekend presentation on the Chinese New Year.
